When she came out—hair up in what was going to have to pass as a French knot, Jenna went directly to the chair to get her dress. She was surprised he wasn’t back with the iron yet, but then she realized the dress was gone. “Okay. I know I put that thing right here.”

There was a knock on the door.

“Jenna,” he called from the other side. “Hey. I’m locked out.”

“Do you have the iron?” she asked from her side without opening the door.

“No, Mom’s ironing your dress. She said it’ll be finished in a few minutes.”

“Mom?” Her eyes widened. “Your mom?”

“Yeah.”

“His mother is ironing my dress,” she muttered to herself in disbelief. “That’s just great. How much weirder can this night get?”

“I’ll go wait for it and bring it back when it’s done,” he said. “Just go ahead and get ready.”

And then he was gone again. Jenna looked around the room. They were going to think she was totally helpless. How utterly embarrassing. Nonetheless, there was nothing to do about it now but try to get ready as much as she could without it.
